Wheelchair vans are vans specifically designed for use by the handicapped. Wheelchair vans are fitted with extra features such as ramps, lifts, lowered flooring, raised roofs, and hand controls for driving.

Choosing a wheelchair van

A wheelchair van is a major investment and should be chosen carefully. You have three options in wheelchair vans: the new wheelchair van with all the modifications to fit your condition, a new van which you will have converted, or a used wheelchair van that already has all the necessary features that you need.
You also have the option of buying a used van to have it converted later. However, experts advise that you buy a used van that is not more than three years old. Few companies are willing to convert a van that is more than three years old. If you must buy a used van, deal with a reputable dealer to avoid being scammed and to secure for yourself the needed assistance in case something goes wrong with your purchase. Also, only purchase a used wheelchair van that comes with certification. This means that the van has been inspected, repaired, and comes with an extended warranty. To be sure, bring your mechanic with you for an expert’s opinion.

Experts advise that if you plan on using wheelchair vans on a full-time basis, you should get brand new ones. The life span of a typical wheelchair van is usually ten years, with the life span of the separate features usually shorter than that. Looking for a used wheelchair van can also be a bit tedious, as you will rarely find a used wheelchair van that looks and works as good as new.

Choosing Between mini and full-sized wheelchair vans

Minivans are the preferred vehicle for wheelchair vans. Some reasons why people prefer minivans are the lower cost for customization, minivans typically require ramps not lifts, and they are smaller, which means that they are easier to drive around and park. Most customizing companies also offer more choices in conversion packages for minivans compared to full-sized vans.
Despite the apparent disadvantages of full-sized vans, a full-sized van may be more suitable in cases where a large amount of room is needed for passengers and wheelchairs. Most full-sized vans also have a lot of headroom which allows assistants to stand fully when wheeling passengers. Full-sized vans are also more powerful and carry more load compared to minivans.
