Stairs lifts are mobility devices used to allow access to rooms by people who cannot use the stairs. A stair lift is basically a stable, mounted railing fitted with a padded chair that runs along the entire length of the stairs. Most stair lifts run on a rack and pinion system and are usually attached to the treads of the stairs. Stair lifts are powered by alternating and direct current power models, and come in a variety of designs to fit the décor of any home.
Who invented the stair lift?
The first stair lift was supposedly built in the early 20th century when polio cases were being discovered in record numbers. The first chair lift was created by C.C. Crispen who wanted to help a friend who was suffering from polio. The first stair lift was called the inclinator and consisted of a chair that was designed to go up and down a track.
What makes a good stair lift?
Quality residential stair lifts usually have adjustable seats to accommodate both the standing and sitting positions. Other features that you should look for in any stair lift include swing away arms, hidden gear jacks, as well as battery compartments to provide power when the main power source is disrupted. The stair lift should also be fitted according to the physical requirements of the user and should be constructed to fit the spiral or curved shape of the staircase for a smooth ride. Stair lifts with simple hand controls are also ideal since they are easier to operate.
How do you choose a stair lift?
If you are looking for a stair lift, there are various factors that you need to consider, such as the cost, the length, the design, the physical condition of the person who will be using the stair lift, the condition of your stairs, and many more. For starters, contact your local stair lift company. Or, canvas different stair lift companies and choose which can provide you the stair lift with the quality and features you are looking for. Most stair lift companies provide free consultations to assess your stairs and to see what kind of stair lift will work for you. They also provide free quotations and free installation.
You also need to factor in the kind of stairs that you have. There are two kinds of stair lifts: the straight stair lift and the curved stair lift. Curved stair lifts are usually more expensive, but if you have curved stairs, this is the kind that will be applicable to you.

We have purchased a new home and would like to install a stairlift for my husband. Our staircase is straight. We would be interested in either buying or renting, depending on which option is best for us.
