Raised toilet seats are contraptions used to raise the height of a low toilet seat to a more comfortable level. This is especially useful to individuals who have a problem getting up from toilet seats, which could include people with hip, thigh or knee problems. Some raised toilets may come with arm rests and hygienic cut-outs for easy cleansing. Arm rests are useful for pushing one’s self up from the toilet seat when standing up.  Raised toilet seats come in various heights and may also be adjusted according to the most comfortable height.

Raised toilet seats are usually clamped to the toilet bowl to secure them. Cleaning raised toilet seats are also easy. Most toilet seats can be cleaned with soapy water or disinfectant along with warm water. A non-abrasive wipe must be used for wiping the surface of the toilet seat.  For more stability, free-standing handles can be bought separately and installed around the toilet bowl. These can be used to grip for a more stable balance when standing up, especially since some may feel like they don’t not have enough support with the arm rest that come attached to some models of raised toilets.

How to Install Raised Toilet Seats

To install a raised toilet seat, lift the toilet cover and seat up. Position the raised toilet seat on the rim of the toilet bowl with the raised end pointing towards the back, making sure that the inner ring of the toilet seat surrounds the rim of the toilet bowl. Push down the raised toilet seat to install it on the rim of the bowl.

To install a raised toilet seat with adjustment knob, raise the cover and the toilet seat and place the raised toilet bowl on the rim. Hook the flanges on the underside of the bowl. The adjustment knob must be on the front of the bowl facing you. Once the raised toilet seat is sitting securely on the rim, turn the adjustment knob to tighten the seat in place. In some instances where the top rear portion of the raised toilet may touch the lid, the toilet seat must be removed to ensure a proper fit. The raised toilet seat must be retightened every week to ensure a proper fit. It is also advisable that you check for cracks along the adjustment knob from time to time, as this is area where cracks from wear and tear tend to occur first.
