Commodes are one of the most useful equipment for persons with disabilities. Commodes are special portable chairs that serve the same purpose as a regular toilet without the attached plumbing. Commodes are portable, that means they can be brought to the bedside and almost anywhere around the house. Commodes typically come with snap-on lids and comfortable back rests and arm rests. A pail-shaped container is located at the bottom of the commode and is used to collect fecal material or urine. Commodes are used to eliminate the need to go to the bathroom to defecate or urinate, useful for persons who are very weak or are not able to walk or stand for long periods of time.
Types of Commodes
Bedside commodes
These resemble chairs with a removal pail at the bottom, a comfortable back rest, arm rests and free-standing legs. Because the pail is removable the commode can be cleaned without having to move the entire chair.
Commode Shower chairs
These are made with rust-resistant material and come with rear tipping pads and toggle brakes and can be wheeled in to the bathroom for showers. Commode shower chairs are relatively lightweight and easy to move.
Tips in Choosing a Commode
Experts caution those who are planning to buy a commode to first identify their needs based on their infirmity. The best commodes are the ones that are designed to fit the needs of a specific client. Advice from your physical therapist on what features will aid you best will help the manufacturer create the commode that is suited for you. This is very important as you will be using commodes every day, especially if you have a permanent or long-term disability. Having a commode that was made especially for you also makes it safer, as some commodes in the market do not pass current safety standards and may not be designed accommodate all of your needs. Making sure that your commode will provide for your elimination needs is essential since stores typically do not accept returns because commodes are hygienic devices.
Qualities to look for in a commode include comfort and stability, weight, price, sanitary engineering, ease of cleaning and ease of use. Comfort and safety should be your priority, followed by weight, since you may need to move the commode from one part of the house to another. High-end commodes may also come with sophisticated flushing systems designed to neutralize odor or convert fecal material into a more solid form for easier removal.
