Bath seats are seats designed to be placed in the bathroom and to be sat on during a bath or a shower. They are usually made of wood or plastic.
Bath seats are used by individuals who cannot stand on the bathroom for long periods of time. They are also used to support babies in a sitting position while you are giving them a bath and for persons with limited mobility who want to bath near the water. Bath seats are used along with a bath board and a non-slip mat. They may also come with a back rests, although backrests that extend over the rim of the bathtub with not allow you to use bath boards during bathing. Weight is one factor to consider when choosing bath seats, as some bath seats may not be able to support very large weights.
Types of Bath Seats
Suspended Bath seats
These come with frames that hang down the sides of the bathtub, with the frame resting snugly on the insides of the tub for a secure fit. Suspended bath seats can be adjusted to fit any size of bathtub using wing nuts. The ends of the each frame are covered with a special non-slip material that keeps it snug against the tub and prevents damage to tub’s finish. Suspended bath seats can be used on acrylic or metal bath tubs.
Freestanding bath seats
Freestanding bath seats look like small benches that you place inside the bathtubs. They come with suction or non-slip pads on the bottom of each leg to prevent the bath seat from slipping on the tub surface. Some also have adjustable side brackets that provide extra grip on the sides of the tub for greater stability.
Wedge bath seats
These come with four hinged paddles attached to the metal seat frame and wedge against the sides of the bathtub. The frames can be adjusted to ensure a tight grip on the sides of the tub.
Choosing a Bath Seats
Choosing a bath seat will depend on the height of the user, the kind of bathtub that you have, and if the bath seat is intended for an adult or a baby. The height is an important consideration since some bath seats only reach up to just below the rim of the bathtub. Free-standing models are usually sold in various heights and can also be fitted with leg extenders. Some wedge bath seats may also come with reversible paddles that allows the user a choice between two seat heights.
